Introducing Quebec's most famous party hostel on the sea, the Auberge Festive Sea Shack offers evenings of entertainment to it's guests. Though not a backpackers hostel per se, Backpackers Hostels Canada is proud to present Queen's University Residence as a great choice for accommodation in the city of Kingston Ontario.

A stone's throw from the Lake Ontario waterfront, Queen's University Residence offers you an economical accommodation choice. Walking distance to downtown Kingston where you have easy access to the famous 1000 Islands Cruises, numerous museums and Kingston's vibrant downtown shops, bars and restaurants. The traditional bedrooms are equipped with one or two single beds,linens, desk and chair. Beds have linens and towel/soap are provided. Housekeeping is provided every other day. Semi-private washrooms are located across the hall.

The Manor, Prince George Hostel

The Manor is Prince George's first and best hostel. The Manor is the perfect place for a cozy, secure, low cost stay in beautiful Prince George whether you are in town for business or pleasure. Sightseeing, mountain biking or hiking in the summer; skiing or snowboarding in the winter, The Manor offers the ideal accommodations for groups, couples and individuals.

Port Mouton International Hostel, Nova Scotia

The area was named Port au Mouton by explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604 when upon arriving in the bay a sheep fell overboard and drowned. The safe harbour protected by the big island, now Port Mouton Island, proved favorable for wintering over and despite many false starts the area has remained settled ever since.

The Port Mouton International backpackers hostel is a quiet rural hostel located in the lower level of the former Port Mouton Consolidated School. We have semi-private rooms, large dorms, and can handle group bookings. It is located half way between Halifax and Yarmouth and is just 20 Km from Liverpool. Liverpool has two grocery stores and several restaurants including the funkiest little Woodpile Carvings and Cafe. and only 5 Km from Carters beach. Carters beach is three crescent shaped tropical-looking beaches in a row. They are rated as some of the best beaches in Nova Scotia. Backpackers can to the hostel by bus however most guests find having a car is best for touring in a rural area.

The hostel provides all bedding and pillows. There is a large fully equipped kitchen area for your use, and a large common area to kick back and relax. The hostel has WIFI and computers for use too for a small donation. There is also a laundry available for use. The Seascape Restaurant, convenience and liquor store are within walking distance from the hostel.

Port Mouton is a great place for bird watchers and artists anytime of the year but particularly during the migration times. Popular activities also include scuba diving, Yoga or meditation groups, or communing with nature. For those interested in Geocaching/scubadiving the two visible points hide treasures. The water is clear and and holds 31 shipwrecks including the Matthew Atlantic, sunk in 1998 to make an artificial reef. Surfing at Westernhead or White Point is a great activity for cooler days. There is also great coastal sailing kayaking, canoeing and sport fishing nearby. Port Joli and the Kejimkujik Seaside Adjunct are nearby and also the Port Joli Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Port L'Hebert Pocket Wilderness, the Port L'Herbert Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and the Thomas Raddall Provincial Park. There is also plenty of great hiking away from the shore, following the many trails that lead to secluded lakes and rivers. There are also trails in Kejimkujik National Park that take a couple hours or take several days to complete. There are many kilometers of rivers and lakes. Liverpool Adventure Outfitters has canoes, kayaks and other equipment for rent. For less rugged vacations there is also Summerville Beach Provincial Park known for its expansive fine, soft white sand beaches. The Quarterdeck Grill at Summerville Beach has great food. There is also the Rails to Trails path which goes from Summerville Centre to Liverpool. These trails are where the old railway lines use to run from Halifax to Yarmouth until 1984 then were discontinued. The trail passes through Hunts Point and White Point.

Rissers Beach Provincial Park and Green Bay are nearby, where you will find the Broad Cove trail, great for scenic walks by the ocean, sea birds, waves and the breeze in the grass. If you are kayaking in this area you can head up the Lahave river to Bridgewater and farther. Shelburne and it's lovely Rail Trail is only an hour's drive, away and has many historic sites.

In the school the upper level classrooms have been converted into a craft co-op store, art, photo gallery and Yard Sale shop. Artist studios are also available for rent throughout the year.

The 'Auberge Alternative' is a budget boutique hostel. The doors were opened in 1996 by travellers passionate about making their lives meet their values. The auberge fuels itself on the positive energy of people wanting to create and evolve. The art of travelling moves the hosts of Auberge Alternative through internal as well as external landscapes and often a creative urge demands to link the two. The Auberge Alternative is an arts hostel providing accommodation and resources to travellers and artists alike to join the operators in redefining bohemia.

An 'auberge' translates as an 'inn' and Auberge Alternative is situated in a 1875 warehouse, which was restored and rejuvenated. Starting with a minimalist budget, furniture and doors were found on the street and restored, the beds were made by hand, what retained value and quality was salvaged and restored, and personal possessions of the designers were thrown in. They used what they had, and in a sense, what they didn't have, to create an art house. The basic attributes and rich textures of the old city building: the rock walls, the old hardwood floors, the arched windows and high ceilings, were restored. The minimalist budget forced inspiration and powered a passion to achieve their goals against what seemed impossible odds.

The Great Kejimkujik Pumpkin Carving Contest, in Kejimkujik Park, Nova Scotia!

A pumpkin carving contest at the Keji Park near Caledonia, Nova Scotia ran from Oct. 8th to 11th 2010. Anyone who stayed at The Caledonia Country Hostel for the whole Thanksgiving weekend (three days) got one night free at the hostel. Additionally, if you stayed at least 2 days, you got 1 day admission to the park free. There is also shuttle service to the park as well as complementary bikes.

Every year an incredibly chaotic and intense but equally friendly and fun event occurs in Thunder Bay--namely the hostel booklet packing party. This year again, on Tuesday May 18th, we were fortunate to have volunteers of different ages and nationalities come to the booklet-packing headquarters to help pack the envelopes and boxes sent to each of the hostels across Canada.

We appreciate each and every person who participated as each person worked diligently in their duties. In the end we supplied 169 hostels with 2010 BHC Hostel Booklets (as shown in the above-right of this page), which you can now find at any of our member locations across Canada.

Thanks to Fada, Emily, Neil, Julius, Willa, Lloyd, Ralph, Brad, Eugene, Marina, Brendon, Daniel, Tina, Martin (and I was there too, Ken) for making the event so productive and for such great company.

Mt. H'Kusam View Lodge is in the Sayward Valley on northern Vancouver Island, a beautiful location where you can just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, view the wildlife and scenery, or take advantage of the many opportunities for outdoor activities.

Your hosts, Jill Tyndale and Chris Watkiss, retired in 2005 from running their organic goat dairy and cheese company, McLennan Creek Dairy, in Abbotsford, B.C. We fell in love with this beautiful part of the world, and decided to make it our home. At the dairy, we were hosts to many Canadian and international volunteers and interns through the WWOOF program. We decided to start a hostel here in Sayward as our retirement project, so that we could continue to enjoy hosting travellers from all over the world.

The lodge is a combination of a hostel and a country inn. The five-room hostel has 15 beds with a lounge with wood stove, kitchen and dining area, games room, library, sauna, TV and wireless internet. All adventures and backpackers will have an interest in this couple. Julie and Colin Angus are bold adventures, having explored and documented their travels in waterways and on land all over the world including Canada. They are presently preparing for presentations in Ottawa, Waterloo, Toronto, and Kingston. They have authored several books including the recent, "Rowed Trip: from Scotland to Syria By Oar", have produced films, have a great blog, website, and Facebook page, and do motivational public-speaking presentation among other things. Colin completed the first human-powered circumnavigation of the planet (43,000 km, 720 days) in 2006. Before that he led the first descent of the Yenisey River and of one of the first of the Amazon River. He is the author of four books and has produced documentaries on many of his journeys. Outside magazine named him one of the top 25 bold visionaries with world changing dreams and National Geographic Adventure awarded him Adventurer of the Year in 2007.

Julie is the first and only woman to row across the Atlantic Ocean from mainland to mainland - 10,000 km in 5 months. She has authored two books, produced two documentaries, and written for an array of magazines and newspapers. Julie has a graduate degree in molecular biology and spent five years developing treatments for medical disorders before fully focusing on adventure and exploration. She received the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award alongside Colin and the McMaster ARCH award.

iBackpackCanada: A Backpackers Travel Guide

Corbin, the author of the blog, iBackpackCanada.com, is a 20-something guy from the 'flatlands of Canada' (Saskatchewan). Corbin's family has a huge farm just North of Regina, which has cattle, a few horses, and thousands of acres of land.

After finishing high school, Corbin planned to take a year off before diving into university, which he refers to as "The Best Trap Ever". Corbin sold his Ford Ranger truck, most of his possessions, and took off for a year of Round the World Travel. Of course, he loved every minute of it, and upon arrival back home, he realized he couldn’t stop.

When Corbin got back from his travels abroad however, and after travelling around Canada for a couple of months, it occurred to him how little info there is regarding Canada for backpackers. Corbin agrees with us that the infrastructure for budget travel in Canada is there--Corbin decided however that for some reason people either have been keeping this a secret or are just too cold to bother telling people about it.

GO Backpackers has gone through a lot of recent changes. The hostel has a full kitchen with a cozy dining room as well as many different common areas which include a TV room and a library/games room that you can kick back and relax in!

There are internet terminals available in the lobby and free WIFI is also available in the common areas. Coin operated laundry is up and running, though the hostel provides all bedding and towels, so there is no need to bring your own. There is also hair dryers in all of the female dorms and private rooms.

The Jekyll and Hyde pub downstairs is a good way to start off an evening of fun! Every Friday, the owners get up on stage and play live music, which is a real treat. Come by and check it out!

GO Backpackers is in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of the Legislature, the Edmonton Art Gallery, City Hall, the Royal Alberta Museum and the Shaw Conference Centre as well as a variety of restaurants. Additionally, the hostel is conveniently located near the LRT (lower rail transit) which gives quick access to places such as the Commonwealth Stadium, Rexall Place and the University of Alberta.
