2010 Backpackers Hostels Canada booklet party

2010 Backpackers Hostels Canada Booklet Party

Every year an incredibly chaotic and intense but equally friendly and fun event occurs in Thunder Bay--namely the hostel booklet packing party. This year again, on Tuesday May 18th, we were fortunate to have volunteers of different ages and nationalities come to the booklet-packing headquarters to help pack the envelopes and boxes sent to each of the hostels across Canada.

We appreciate each and every person who participated as each person worked diligently in their duties. In the end we supplied 169 hostels with 2010 BHC Hostel Booklets (as shown in the above-right of this page), which you can now find at any of our member locations across Canada.

Thanks to Fada, Emily, Neil, Julius, Willa, Lloyd, Ralph, Brad, Eugene, Marina, Brendon, Daniel, Tina, Martin (and I was there too, Ken) for making the event so productive and for such great company.

The 2009 Backpackers Hostels Conference in Kelowna

The 2009 Backpackers Hostels Conference in Kelowna!

Every year, several hostel owners and operators gather at the annual Backpackers Hostels Canada conference to discuss issues concerns and ideas and of course to get together and have a good time.

As you can see in the photo below, Kelowna is breathtaking. Participants stayed at one of the Kelowna Hostels, Kelowna International Hostel and Samesun Kelowna, and both hostels helped organize the event with complete professionalism...was a real blast! Next year, the Backpackers Hostels Canada conference will be held on Canada's East Coast.

To start your own hostel in Canada, please contact us for information.

2009 Backpacker Hostels Canada maps!

Backpacker Hostels Canada maps!

We've finally got our 2009 maps out thanks to a number of sponsors. The maps are a nice way of locating hostels and their contact information on a nice and shiny yet light-weight paper.

The maps will be found at every hostel in the BHC network while supplies last, especially the map of Canada, listing all BHC hostels in Canada, as the other (regional) maps will be printed in fewer quantity. The 2009 BHC maps include the Map of Canada, and maps of Western Canada, Central Canada, and Eastern Canada (shown below).

Incidentally, the 2009 hostel booklet is also out of publishing. Besides listing all of the hostels in Canada, and their contact information, the booklet contains discount coupons offering two dollars off of one night's stay at over 90 participating hostels. The hostels participating are denoted in the booklet by a little polar bear beside the booklet listing. There is also a space provided beside each listing so that you can get your booklet rubber-stamped at each hostel you stay at.

Why stay at a hostel?

Thank you for the excellent submission of why a hostel is a great place to stay, to the host of the Painted Turtle Guesthouse (Nanaimo BC), Verena Lunke.

"A stay at a hostel is:
  • the best cooking teacher (even better than grandmother): where else can you learn how to cook meals from "grandmothers" all over the world
  • the best language teacher: Cheers! Prost! Sante! Salud! Na zdrowie! ....
  • the best gaming teacher: from foosball to Monopoly to the strangest games you have ever seen
  • the best teacher about people: wow, you meet so many different types of people
  • the best teacher about the world: every person you meet, has a story about the world
  • the best teacher about yourself: you know yourself at home, but being around the world is a different thing :-) "
